Beautiful place. Busy, but plenty of grounds to find some private space. Stunning grounds and landscape.

Lowther Castle is a stunning structure with an architectural style reminiscent of a German castle, yet it is undeniably English. It embodies all the hallmark features of a medieval castle and is located in the northern part of Cumbria, England, within the picturesque Lake District. You’ll find it on the road to Shap, a small village near Tebay. At the entrance, there is a charming café offering a variety of refreshments. The admission fee is £15 per adult and £45 per family. However, I must be honest—the garden visit was underwhelming. In my opinion, the ticket price doesn’t justify the current state of the gardens. The rock garden is virtually non-existent, and the Japanese garden feels empty, aside from a small pond with little else of interest. While the estate itself is expansive, I found the £15 entry fee to be poor value. Next time, I’d simply admire the castle from the outside and enjoy the café instead.

Buy a hot chocolate from the cafe. This is not the only reason to visit, but we are regular visitors here and it was really very nice (it was a cold day). Looking forward to hiring a bike on the next visit (warmer weather required).

Unfortunately we had a very dissapointing visit here today. Nothing to do with the facilities or staff but the weather was so stormy and treacherous. Wind gusts up to 50mph and heavy rain meaning my family with young children were unable to explore any of the castle gardens or play area. Instead we walked through the exhibtion, which was interesting to us adults but not so much for the children, they got to look out of the window at the gardens and that was as far as we could get. Just getting to and from the car park was a difficult task. We had pre-booked online and after paying £45 was unable to access anything. We tried to wait around and even spent another £40 in the cafe to see if the weather would imrpove but sadly it was relentless and predicted that way for the rest of the day, making it impossible for us to have any enjoyment. The staff seemed lovely and of course not their fault and I totally understand that weather conditions are out of their hands but when it is that bad there really should be an option to return on another day. The staff even said they thought they should have closed. The place from the map looks great, just disappointing that we won't get the chance to experience how great it is unless we pay another £45. We are a family of walkers and used to light showers but today was something else.

A beautiful place to unwind alone, as a couple or family. There are car parks, cycle trails and a cafe. You can cycle safely or stroll at your leisure. A great spot if your near Penrith and love abit of history. The castle's pink shimmering stone is impressive and set in a little haven for walkers. All essential facilities are onsite so you can relax knowing your covered. This place is wheelchair friendly from start to finish.

Beautiful grounds to spend time in. Obviously very few flowers in February but some Snowdrops about. Definitely look forward to returning later in the year. And the Coffee and Walnut cake on the cafe was delicious.

Would have left 5 stars but i went the weekend after the windy weather and due to it the play area and surrounding woodland was off limits. And to top it off the exhibition was closed which actually bothered me. Would have liked to be offered a free ticket to return another time as I paid full price for half the experience and travelled over 60 miles for it. Carpark is huge and plenty of spaces. The castle was lovely. Very picturesque and the map given was good to explore the hidden areas around the garden. I'm sure it's brilliant in summertime with the flowers and wildlife. The cafe was cozy, coffee was top tier and staff were very friendly. It was a great half day. Would have been a great full day if I had the full experience and got to learn the lore behind the area. Can't help the weather but an email or rebook option would have been good.
